Two of my bookshelf speaker designs

Since the early 90's I have designed and built numerous loudspeakers for fun. The models vary from small monitor speakers (the B110) through to large subwoofers. I have documented two of the early models here. If you find any of this interesting, please send some feedback from my loudspeaker home page.

Model B110 - single driver monitor speakers

This speaker was designed after I found I had a pair of Pioneer car speakers without a home. The interesting part of this experiment was altering the driver to be suitable for use in a bass-reflex enclosure. Being car speakers, they had a high Qts of around 0.7. I lowered this significantly by the use of resistive cloth across the rear of the driver, as well as by loading the cone with extra mass.

  • 4" dual cone Pioneer TS-101 driver
  • Matrix cabinet construction
  • Foam damped front baffle
  • Attractive wrap-around cloth appearance
  • Gloss black end-caps
  • Bass-reflex design with 2" off-centre rear port

Model HT213A - home theatre monitor speakers

I built a high quailty home theatre sound system. For proper matching, I believe it is necessary to have identical left, centre, and right speakers. With this in mind, I built three identical cabinets, using Vifa drivers throughout.

  • M-T-M design - symmetrically aligned
  • 2 shielded 5" midbass drivers - paper cone with rubber surround
  • 1 shielded 1" aluminium dome tweeter
  • 1" thick customwood enclosures
  • 4 shelf braces per enclosure giving massive strength
  • Acoustically decoupled pads to further reduce vibration
  • Acoustic foam around tweeter
  • 2nd order L-R crossover @ 3kHz
  • Gold binding posts
  • Attractive black wrap-around cloth appearance
  • Solid wood Macracarpa end-caps in mirror gloss finish
  • Bass-reflex design with 3" rear mounted port
